The Youth Power Zone at Fruitvale Station

CURYJ's vision for Youth Power Zones was born out of the Fruitvale gang injunction, which profiled youth and limited their ability to be at home in the neighborhood. Instead of creating zones in which young people are criminalized, kicked out, and disempowered, what if we could create zones of power and belonging?

Youth Power Zone at Fruitvale Station

1150 35th Ave, Oakland, CA

Opened in September 2024, the Youth Power Zone at Fruitvale Station is more than a home for CURYJ: It is the first building-block of community infrastructure that will help us realize the end to youth incarceration in California during our lifetimes. CURYJ occupies the 7,000 foot commercial space on the ground floor of the building, while The Unity Council and BRIDGE housing partner to provide 181 units of fully affordable family housing in the development above. The Youth Power Zone is home to CURYJ’s core programs and serves as a hub for community members and partner organizations.

CURYJ members socialize in the inviting kitchen and lounge area, with a large 'CURYJ' sign lit up above the kitchen counter. The warm atmosphere emphasizes CURYJ’s focus on community and connection in their spaces.

    BUILDING TWO

    Bonanza Store

    3617 International Blvd, Oakland, CA

CURYJ recently purchased the old Bonanza store on International – a 10,000 square foot commercial space located across the street from building one of the Youth Power Zone. In the short term, we are using the space to host art builds for our movement work, to showcase local art, and as temporary storage. We are engaging in a community design process as we re-envision the space as a Climate Resilience Hub for the Fruitvale. Our goal is to completely retrofit the building as a community center and emergency response shelter which will open its doors sometime in 2027.
