Since we began organizing 10 years ago, we’ve always dreamed about having a permanent space to call our own. A home where we can center and deepen our unique model of healing justice, incubate social enterprise opportunities for formerly incarcerated young people, and support the proliferation of community, cultural, and movement building in Oakland.
We are so proud to share with you that our dream is now becoming a reality. We recently broke ground on CURYJ’s Oscar Grant Youth Empowerment Zone, as part of a 181-unit affordable housing complex called Casa Sueños at the Fruitvale Transit Village, through a partnership with The Unity Council and BRIDGE Housing.
Upon completion, the roughly 7,000 sq. ft. Oscar Grant Youth Empowerment Zone will provide:
- A larger homebase for CURYJ to expand our programs
- The Movement Building Hub, a multipurpose center to foster community, arts, and cultural activism
- La Cultural Cura Cultural Arts Cafe, which will employ formerly incarcerated young people while directly fueling and funding CURYJ’s work
The significance of the Youth Empowerment Center at Fruitvale Station cannot be understated.
CURYJ was born from the deep legacy of Oakland’s social movements that changed the way we all live, such as the Black Panther Party and the campaign to bring justice for Oscar Grant. We named the empowerment zone after Oscar Grant as a tribute to the young man who lost his life at the hands of BART police officers, as well as the countless other young people of color who continue to get brutalized and outright murdered by law enforcement.
With this permanent space, Oakland’s youth and their families will have a hub to gather, heal, and continue making profound changes for their communities. Additionally, CURYJ will be poised to expand our holistic offerings and scale up our programs and services to make national impacts.
As we take important steps towards this dream, we invite you to join our efforts. Whether a $10 or a $10,000 donation, we deeply appreciate your support and commitment to turn our dreams into reality.
The Oscar Grant Youth Empowerment Zone at Fruitvale Station presents a unique opportunity for developers to work in solidarity with local communities and state organizations in order to ensure that the cultural heritage, activism, and diversity of Fruitvale are protected and preserved. By working with us to create the Oscar Grant Youth Empowerment Zone, our partners and funders are investing in our young people and in our community’s deep cultural resources. They are helping us become part of the first line of defense against rising gentrification and displacement, while funding the alternative to youth incarceration.
